Groundwork London and the London Sustainability Exchange (LSx) have received funding from Defra and SITA Trust to transform 45 areas of derelict land in the Olympic Host Boroughs and encourage people to live more sustainably.
Applications are now open for community groups who want to transform derelict land into a green space or community garden, as well as improving local recycling rates and empowering people to lead more sustainable lifestyles and engage in environmental volunteering.
Transform is a core part of the London 2012 Changing Places programme, an initiative which aims to support communities in the Olympic host boroughs to secure lasting social and environmental benefits as a legacy of the Games. Transform enables Groundwork London to give time and materials to support local community groups transform their rundown and underused green and open spaces into thriving community resources.
The scheme runs until 2013 and aims to help groups increase their confidence and capability to sustain these projects into the longer term.

How can we help you
We can help you get your project off the ground. We will provide you with professional advice and support to kick-start your project. We will also be able to purchase materials, plants and tools for your site to help establish it fully. We we will be on hand to help provide advice, guidance and expertise. We can help you set up a community garden or food growing project; fundraising towards a new/improved play area; carrying out a piece of public art; or any other ways you can think of for making your space work better for you and your local community. All of our projects will incorporate support for you and your local community to explore ways to live in a more environmentally sustainable way.
Eligibility
Your group of three or more people does not have to be formally arranged or constituted, but must meet regularly and be able to put energy and enthusiasm into the new project. Your group must be based in Barking & Dagenham, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest.
Applications can be submitted from groups for gated areas and public places that have restricted access (e.g. schools); but to be successful they would have to demonstrate how the wider community could be involved in the site. This could include open days, summer fayres, or permission for access granted via a lock and key.
Apply for funding
1. Call us to discuss your project on the number below. This will help you to determine if you project is eligible and will greatly enhance the chances of your application being successful.
2. Complete your application form. Please see guidance notes accompanying the form for further information.
3. A Groundwork London officer will then visit your group to assess it and report back to the selection panel.
4. You can apply at any time up until 11 July 2012 - please see closing dates stated above. Your application will then go to the London 2012 Changing Places selection panel. The selection process can take up to eight weeks and all applicants will be informed of the panel’s decision.
5. Whether or not your application is successful is entirely at Groundwork London’s discretion. The decision of the selection panel is final.
