Thousands of people are set to benefit from free home visits from Groundwork London's Green Doctors to help them lower their utility bills. People can save up to £160 a year as part of the RE:NEW initiative, a programme funded by the Mayor of London that aims to increase energy efficiency of homes in the capital.
The Green Doctor scheme is running until March 2012. Domestic Energy Advisors will carry out home assessments and advise residents on how they can improve the energy and water efficiency of their homes and lower their utility bills. A survey of the property will be carried out to find out how the home is heated and insulated to determine what energy saving devices can be installed.
A range of free energy and water saving devices, worth up to £100, can be installed which includes energy saving light bulbs, standby switches and an energy monitor to help see the electricity that is being used in the household. Residents aged over 70 or those in receipt of income related benefits could be eligible for free cavity wall insulation and full loft insulation.
