Brent's Climate Change Youth Ambassadors previous pledge event at IKEA, Wembley
Sixth-formers from Capital City Academy in Harlesden will be spreading positive environmental messages to shoppers at IKEA Wembley on Sunday 5 February 2012. From 1:00pm - 3:00pm, the students, who make up Team Green West, will encourage shoppers to sign environmental pledges and commit to reducing their impact on the environment by changing one aspect of their lifestyle to become more sustainable.
Brent’s Climate Change Youth Ambassadors are working with IKEA to raise awareness about climate change for a second consecutive year. The volunteers aim to encourage shoppers to commit to making environmental pledges such as saving energy and water, buying local or fair-trade produce, making fewer journeys by car and environmental volunteering. Those pledging to make a difference will be entered into a raffle with the opportunity to win prizes of an organic food hamper, wind up radio and eco washing balls. Team Green West will also be producing a short film as a record of the day and have been honing their film making skills in preparation.
This outreach activity is one of many that Brent’s teenagers are taking part in as part of a year-long Ambassadors scheme where young Londoners aim to make a difference by raising environmental awareness in their communities.
The initiative is part of environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London’s Climate Change Youth Ambassadors programme that supports 13-19 year olds to communicate their climate change and environmental concerns to their local communities. This is achieved through local events, multimedia, music, arts, and intergenerational projects. Groundwork London engages the volunteers to take part in workshops, inspirational visits and knowledge building activities to learn more about climate change and sustainable living.
The London-wide programme engages 100 volunteers each year and is funded by Johnson Controls, and C-Change, a transnational cooperation project funded by the European Union’s INTERREG IVB Programme. The C-Change Partnership are delivering a network of climate change projects across north west Europe with three themes: community engagement and behaviour change, creating multi functional open spaces and adapting city spatial planning strategies to respond to the challenges of climate change.
